Martha Thorne is Dean of IE School of Architecture and Design. Since 2005, she has served as the Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, popularly known as the “Nobel Prize for Architecture.” Her interests have always focused on international contemporary architecture, cities in evolution and changes in the role of the architect.

Prior to joining IE University, she was Associate Curator of the Department of Architecture at The Art Institute of Chicago. Her responsibilities involved curating exhibitions, developing publications, and participating in a ground-breaking study on collecting, archiving and exhibiting digitally created design materials. She is the co-author of the books Masterpieces of Chicago Architecture and Skyscrapers: The New Millennium, editor and author for The Pritzker Architecture Prize: The First Twenty Years, and author of numerous articles for architectural journals and encyclopedias.

Martha Thorne received a Master’s in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Affairs from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She undertook additional studies at the London School of Economics. She currently serves on an international jury for the award, ArcVision: Women and Architecture, a prize honoring outstanding women architects. She also lectures and assists with international architectural competitions.

The IE School of Architecture and Design’s architecture program uses a more practice-led approach which prioritizes group work, multi-disciplinary learning and an exploration of entrepreneurialism and “alternative practices”, looking at new areas into which architects may want to move including Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. This evolution from the traditional architectural hierarchy and a narrow definition of architectural practice to new areas, technologies and ways of working is an exciting opportunity to for architects to have a broader impact. Martha believes architects need to think beyond building design and instead foster an entrepreneurial spirit to innovate in the built environment.

Odile Decq is a French architect and urban planner. International renown came in 1990 with her first major commission: La Banque Populaire de l’Ouest in Rennes. Since then, she has been faithful to her fighting attitude while diversifying and radicalizing her research.

Being awarded The Golden Lion of Architecture during the Venice Biennale in 1996 acknowledged her early and unusual career. Other than just a style, an attitude or a process, Odile Decq’s work materializes a complete universe that embraces urban planning, architecture, design and art. Her multidisciplinary approach was recently recognized with the Prix Femme Architecte in 2013 and the Jane Drew Prize in 2016.

Her most recent projects include: Le Cargo [Paris, 2016]; La Résidence Saint-Ange [Seyssins, 2015]; Fangshan Museum [Nanjing, 2015]; GL Events Headquarters [Lyon, 2014]; MACRO [Rome, 2010]; FRAC Bretagne [Rennes, 2012] and Phantom: Opéra Garnier’s restaurant [Paris, 2011].

Odile Decq has been teaching architecture for the past 25 years, a commitment ratified by the opening in 2014 of her own school in Lyon, France: the Confluence Institute for Innovation and Creative Strategies in Architecture.

Read a summary of their manifesto below:

CONFLUENCE is an educational approach that is open, alternative, international, collaborative and innovative, moving towards a hopeful and forward-looking architecture for the 21st century.

CONFLUENCE is the place where open attitudes and autonomous temperaments are forged through diverse forms of experimentation. The teaching of architecture must allow students to confront problems encountered in the world and to use new tools to address them.

CONFLUENCE is the convergence of different forms of knowledge that generate new understandings and hybrid forms of research. Different disciplines like physics, biology, neurology, and new technologies as well as sociology and the visual arts take part — in an original way — in the elaboration of teaching and contribute to the elaboration of research and new projects.
