Marta Brandão is an architect. She has studied in Porto at FAUP and in Lausanne at the EPFL.

Between 2008 and 2012, Marta worked as a collaborator of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland. She holds a PhD from the EPFL Lausanne, on the subject of Design Complexity and Big Buildings. She’s been a researcher of the Complex Design program. At MIMA, Marta Brandão is responsible for the design and development of new projects, supervision of construction phases, interior design, PR, communication and written information.

About MIMA

“MIMA is a multidisciplinary design office that focuses simultaneously on the formulation of architectural concepts and in their conversion to reality, under the form of simple and accessible products. MIMA intends to be more than an architecture office, and rather epitomize a brand new philosophy of simplification and seduction that will gradually apply to the most varied scales of architecture.

A quick glimpse at the current economical and social scene automatically undermines the idea of an architecture produced slowly and heavily by individual craftsmanship. Gradually, one should point towards a close involvement between architects, industry, software and mass production, aiming for the development of quick, high quality and cost efficient architectural products.

Prior to becoming a product, each MIMA project is conceived as part of a complex system, optimized and tested to the smallest detail. Each new product embodies a complex treatise, which implies the translation of architectural rules into software, ultimately allowing for any user to formulate his/her own personal project within the universe of rules that has been pre-established by the architect. Besides allowing for a customized conception, this custom software automatically transmits all the information to the factory, allowing for an immediate cost estimation and subsequent prosecution of the construction.

MIMA’s aim is to bring forward the development of a “Sensible Architecture”. Sensible relates to reality, to observation, to simplification, and mainly, to results. MIMA does not only conceive architecture, but rather delivers architecture, seeking to carry forward the Modernist dream of prefabrication, of integrated design, of architectural democratization. A “Sensible Architecture” can also be sensitive, by means of applying traditional materials with a thorough sensorial care, stimulating the way people identify and engage with space, images and forms.”

In 2011, Mário Sousa has founded MIMA, together with Miguel and Marta and dove into an investigation on housing schemes and prefab construction methods, started already in 2007. At MIMA Lab, Mário is a creative brain and systematically comes up with ideas for new products while still following closely the design development of the ongoing projects.

In 2009, Natasha Case founded Coolhaus with Freya Estreller. Natasha and Freya launched their architecturally inspired gourmet ice cream sandwich company from their barely drive-able postal van at the Coachella Music Festival, which brought their ice cream to an audience of 100,000.

Over the festival weekend they garnered a loyal following and a great deal of viral press, returning to LA with a rapidly growing social media fan base and an eager audience of foodies. Since then, Natasha has been named a Forbes “30 under 30” and Zagat “30 Under 30”, and has been featured in many national publications and TV shows, including the Food Network’s Chopped and King of Cones, and Andy Cohen Live.

Coolhaus has become one of the leading innovative small dessert businesses, growing significantly over the years to include 4 trucks and 2 storefronts in LA, 2 trucks and 1 cart in NYC, 2 trucks in Austin and 2 trucks in Dallas, Texas. Now, consumers can even find Coolhaus’ pre-packaged ice cream sandwiches, hand-dipped bars, and hand-packed pints in 4,000+ gourmet grocery stores nationwide, from Whole Foods and Sprouts to larger retailers like Kroger and Safeway.

Today, Natasha is the CEO of Coolhaus, creating new product opportunities, building new relationships and innovating in ways that keep Coolhaus on top of its game as the company’s rapid expansion is set to continue.

Steven Burns received his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Syracuse University.

In 1993, after seven years as an Associate and Senior Designer with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, working in Chicago, London and Berlin, Burns opened his own firm, Burns + Beyerl Architects (BBA).

Four years later, he started working on a software solution for streamlining his own business. He turned this solution into a product, ArchiOffice, which became a commercial success.

Steven Burns then took his management expertise to BQE Software, where he currently enhances their business strategy and product development as Chief Creative Officer.

In an alternative career as an architect/software developer, Steven Burns, FAIA has effected profound change in the way thousands of architectural firms manage their office and projects. He took his proven architectural skills of efficiently solving design problems and applied them to software development; creating ArchiOffice®, a unique application used by every employee within an architectural firm from principal to intern to simplify management, streamline tasks, share information and most importantly, reduce risk.

In 1993, after seven years as an Associate and Senior Designer with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, working in Chicago, London and Berlin, Burns opened his own firm, Burns + Beyerl Architects (BBA). Four years later, his small five person firm, though profitable was suffering from the same ailment which afflicts many small and medium sized firms: being as undisciplined in their own management as they were disciplined in creating beautiful designs for their clients. Burns felt that only an architect, intimately familiar with the process and business of an architectural firm, could create an elegant, aesthetic workflow and management system. So began his three year journey learning software programming and building ArchiOffice, software that integrates contact and document management, time and expense tracking, project workflow including checklists, milestones; submittal, RFI and drawing tracking; calendaring, scheduling, budgeting and invoicing into a single, easy to use and understand application. The goal was to provide Burns with more time to do what he loved most: designing architecture.

The impact of the software upon BBA was so significant that Burns created Orange Loft, LLC to turn ArchiOffice, into commercial quality software and provide for its continual improvement. He knew that as other architects used the software, they would have valuable ideas that could lead to its enhancement. The essence of ArchiOffice is to take a community of small and mid-sized architectural firms, provide them with a means and incentive to share management ideas, manifest them in the software and return them back to the community.

Maximilian Pauen studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna and has worked for architectural and design studios in Vienna, Berlin and Arezzo. Prior to his studies, he apprenticed furniture designer Paul Kelley in London. Max has won numerous competitions in housing and urban design.

Maximilian was the founder of Bullenberg – A young furniture label from Berlin. With wood from their own forest, they manufacture custom, artfully designed furniture for design savvy people.

All of our products are made exclusively of oak from these local forests in Saxony-Anhalt. Bullenberg is defined by the beauty and strength of wood as a material, architectural design and integrity, and the fundamental commitment to local manufacturing. Each piece of furniture is crafted individually and is therefore entirely customizable.

We began in 2013, when a mutual friend was looking for a solid oak table top for his Kreuzberg home. Everything that was available in Berlin was too inconvenient and expensive. So, Albrecht suggested that he could supply this friend with some oak from the von Alvensleben forest – with success. At that point, it occurred to us that we could be designing and manufacturing tables ourselves.

Albrecht and Maximilian Pauen design and manufacture handcrafted wooden tables out of oak wood, taken from the forest of the von Alvensleben family in Saxony-Anhalt, 200 km west of Berlin. The manufacturing process is very personal to the two architects: they carefully select each tree before processing them into logs. Everyone involved in the production is located within a 15 km radius, thus ensuring that each table has been individually crafted and can be entirely customizable.
