The office engages in numerous design-related activities, including applied research, opportunistic planning, strategic development and conventional architectural practice. Notable recently completed projects include 3106 St. Thomas, the first unit under the Starter Home* development agenda, which has received wide recognition, and Wetland Urbanism, a research and publication project that was exhibited at the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Jonathan Tate, and the practice, have been recognized as part of the 2017 Emerging Voices by the Architectural League of New York, a Next Progressive by Architect Magazine and a 2018 finalist for the international Architecture Review Emerging Architect Award. They have received numerous awards for their work, including a 2018 National AIA Housing Award and a 2019 National AIA Honor Award.

Jonathan Tate received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Auburn University. As a student at Auburn, he participated in the Rural Studio, an internationally recognized design/build program that provides innovative housing and facilities for rural Alabamians. He completed his graduate studies at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, with a Master in Design Studies degree in Housing and Urbanization.

Archipreneur Interview Intro:

When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Jonathan Tate and his colleagues gradually relocated their office from Memphis to New Orleans to focus on rebuilding. Amidst a global economic recession, a few years later Jonathan decided to go off on his own. Traditional architectural practice was income generating, but he made time for speculative development projects on the side. He and his business partner(s) took an interest in small and affordable parcels of land to develop Starter Homes.

While maintaining his architectural practice, Jonathan has turned to alternate financing models for future development projects. He led the first equity crowdfunded project in the U.S. and he continues to use this model to develop artists bed and breakfasts (B&Bs), where resident artists contribute to a running the B&B in exchange for room and board. Through his work as an architect and developer, Jonathan demonstrates how designers can “inject creativity” and create new and meaningful opportunities in the built environment.

Prior to joining IE University, she was Associate Curator of the Department of Architecture at The Art Institute of Chicago. Her responsibilities involved curating exhibitions, developing publications, and participating in a ground-breaking study on collecting, archiving and exhibiting digitally created design materials. She is the co-author of the books Masterpieces of Chicago Architecture and Skyscrapers: The New Millennium, editor and author for The Pritzker Architecture Prize: The First Twenty Years, and author of numerous articles for architectural journals and encyclopedias.

Martha Thorne received a Master’s in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Affairs from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She undertook additional studies at the London School of Economics. She currently serves on an international jury for the award, ArcVision: Women and Architecture, a prize honoring outstanding women architects. She also lectures and assists with international architectural competitions.

The IE School of Architecture and Design’s architecture program uses a more practice-led approach which prioritizes group work, multi-disciplinary learning and an exploration of entrepreneurialism and “alternative practices”, looking at new areas into which architects may want to move including Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. This evolution from the traditional architectural hierarchy and a narrow definition of architectural practice to new areas, technologies and ways of working is an exciting opportunity to for architects to have a broader impact. Martha believes architects need to think beyond building design and instead foster an entrepreneurial spirit to innovate in the built environment.

Carmen is a certified architect, having earned a degree in Architecture at the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid in 2002, and an MRICS-accredited professional in the area of Management and Consulting. She gained additional training at IE in the areas of Strategic Management, Project Management, Corporate Finance, and Digital Marketing, and she also completed a course in Management of High-Performance Teams at ESADE.

Carmen Panadero was honored with the IE Woman of the Month Award in May 2015 and the Women and Leadership Program Scholarship at the Aliter International Business School in 2011, granted by the Rafael del Pino Foundation (Grupo Ferrovial).
